ECOWAS Reaffirms 2027 Launch Date for the Eco Single Currency

The Eco single currency project, driven by ECOWAS, dates back decades and was originally planned for 2020, repeatedly postponed due to a lack of macroeconomic convergence among the bloc's 15 member states, eight of which already share the CFA franc through WAEMU. This reaffirmation comes as the bloc goes through political turmoil, with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger having withdrawn from the organization. According to Daba Finance, relayed by AllAfrica, West African leaders reaffirmed their commitment to launching the Eco in 2027, adopting a phased approach: only countries meeting the bloc's macroeconomic convergence criteria will be allowed to join the monetary union at launch. The source dispatch names no specific leader, and does not detail the criteria used or the number of states currently compliant. For member states, the challenge is to stabilize inflation, deficits and debt in time to qualify. For businesses and savers, a single currency would promise lower exchange costs and better integration of regional markets, a potential source of appeal for investors. This phased approach, comparable to a multi-speed monetary zone, reflects caution after repeated delays. Yet the withdrawal of three Sahelian countries from ECOWAS raises questions about the project's real scope, and the absence of recent macroeconomic data in this dispatch leaves open the question of the 2027 timeline's actual credibility.
