AUDA-NEPAD launches programme for Africa's island economies

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has announced the launch of a five-year programme dedicated to the continent's island economies. The initiative comes as Africa's small island states, often dependent on tourism, fisheries and imports, rank among the territories most exposed to climate change - rising sea levels, cyclones, coastal erosion - while remaining marginalised in intra-African trade due to geographic isolation and limited transport infrastructure. According to African Business, this five-year framework aims to help seven island nations adapt to climate change, strengthen trade and transport, and build stronger economic linkages. The source dispatch, very brief, does not specify which countries are involved, the funding mobilised, or the partners associated with the programme - all of which remain open questions. For these micro-states, such a framework could facilitate access to climate finance and integration into the AfCFTA, which remains complex for small-scale economies. Structurally, these countries share common fragilities: narrow domestic markets, dependence on imports, and fiscal vulnerability to climate shocks. The launch comes as global climate finance remains a major diplomatic issue, with small island states having demanded priority access to green funds for years.
